| 28/04/03 | Auto gritters for Sunderland | Sunderland City Council just ordered two new Volvo FLE 6x4 snowplough gritters with automatic transmissions. | 13/05/03 | Auto industry goes green | The SMMT just launched its second annual CO2 report, covering 2002. This shows car CO2 emissions down 8.2 per cent on the 1997 baseline and 1.9 per cent below the 2001 average. The report also says the 38 per cent increase in diesel powered cars, to take 23.5 per cent of UK registrations certainly helped, as did a more general move toward smaller cars. The SMMT said that government taxation policy has an important influence on diesel car uptake across the EU. The average market share on the mainland is 40 per cent, with a peak of 60 per cent in France. With diesels giving much better fuel consumption than petrol engines, there is an obvious opportunity for the UK government to play a real role in helping cut car fuel use, and thus emissions, by sensible taxation policy.
