14/01/2003Aquatarder from VoithVoith's new hydrodynamic brake, the Aquatarder will make its UK exhibition debut on the company's stand, 3-415 at the CV Show in March. Voith says the new retarder is lighter, and gives better braking power across the entire speed range. Voith says the innovation is in the extension of the engine's cooling system to include the retarder. This brings the unit's weight down to only 32 kg, making it, as the company says, a true lightweight. Industry observers think that light weight retarders should prove popular with weight and cost conscious truck operators, where the ability to cut braking costs will be welcome.

28/10/03Are you getting the best out of the CV press? If you’re not so sure and you’re in the CV or road transport business, this is for you. With the CV show just over four months away, the SMMT plans a half day ‘CV media workshop’ on Wednesday 12 November at the NEC. ‘We saw around £6m worth of press coverage for exhibitors at the last CV Show and confidently expect more for the next’ says CV Show press officer Robin Dickeson, ‘but that coverage was unevenly spread, with too many exhibitors failing to get their stories across as well as they might.’ The SMMT PR workshop will help people do better and make the most of the valuable media opportunities both at the CV Show and more generally. The workshop looks at the value of press coverage, how to get into the press, how to write successful press releases and how to talk to journalists. Chaired by Robin Dickeson, the workshop will feature Andy Salter, editor of Commercial Motor and Mike Keeler, managing director of Garnett Keeler, one of the UK’s leading CV and road transport industry PR agencies. There will also be a limited number of confidential ‘hot-house’ clinics, available by prior arrangement for individual delegates to discuss specific issues relating to their companies. All the spaces are on a first-come first-served basis, priced at £150 plus VAT and going well, so if you want be sure of getting the best out of the press, don't miss this opprtunity. CV Show exhibitors and SMMT members pay £125 plus VAT.

20/09/04Asda takes 196 Scania R-Series Scania just said it won a deal to supply supermarket chain Adsa with 196 Scania R-series trucks. These will go into its UK distribution fleet during November 2004. All the new trucks will all be R 420 two axle tractors, 50 with Scania's newly-revised and upgraded Opticruise gear-selection system. Asda's fleet contracts manager, Chris Strutt says the firm took Opticruise for the first time to do a large-scale trial of its performance. Strutt also says Asda will buy more two axle rather than three axle tractors to cut operating costs. The 196 new trucks come with 50 month repair and maintenance contracts based on around 140,000 miles a year, working nationwide.

08/02/05ATS tries nitrogenATS Euromaster says it is trying nitrogen filled tyres at 25 of its UK outlets through three companies, Pneu-Air, Parkers and Tyresafety. The big selling point that the gas does not leak through tyres as oxygen does, in theory meaning nitrogen-filled tyres can hold pressure indefinitely. So far the trial has been confined to retail customers, but ATS is keen to try this idea with major leasing companies.

06/06/05Audit proves what CV Show exhibitors already knewThe Audit Bureau of Circulations just confirmed that 26, 843 people went to the Commercial Vehicle Show and the Automotive Trade Show on 5 to 7 April at the NEC. The ABC independently confirms the accuracy of visitor figures at exhibitions. More detailed data from visitor registrations shows those visitors had more buying power than at any previous CV Show and ATS. 72% were owners, directors or senior managers and nearly 50% said they were directly responsible for buying trucks, 42% did the same for vans, tankers, tippers and reefers and nearly 30% buy trailers. The figures confirm the feelings of exhibitors, suggesting influential visitors and good business leads for the two complimentary business to business exhibitions.

09/09/03August CV registrations continue the investment driveCV registrations rose 18.5 per cent in August to 19,267 with registrations over the year-to-date up 13.6 per cent to 227,999. Light CVs still drive that growth, up 21.9 per cent in August 14.8 per cent on the year to date and truck volumes are up 5.9 per cent and 8.4 per cent for the month and year to date. Bus and coach volumes were 36.2 per cent up in August, and 6.2 per cent over the year to date. 'Six straight months growth confirmed the surge in business investment in new commercial vehicles' said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. 'Nearly all sectors, light and heavy alike, shared in the strong business demand. The firm growth trend in new CVs is very encouraging during a time of otherwise lacklustre investment. As business confidence is now recovering, demand should hold firm, possibly pushing the annual total to 350,000, a the highest since the 1980s.'
