| 05/08/03 | 65 per cent of truckers won't use M6 toll | The FTA says 65 per cent of replies to its latest Quarterly Transport Activity Survey said that because of the high fee their trucks won't use the new M6 Toll road as an alternative to the M6, even during rush hour. The toll road, due to open in January 2004, is a bypass for the busy M6 between junctions 3a and 11a. Trucks will pay £10 per trip, cut to £9 at night. Vans will pay £5, cut to £4 at night. The fee for cars is just £2. The prices include VAT. FTA chief economist Simon Chapman said, 'Our research shows that if the truck toll was dropped to £5, the total income from trucks would rise by 12 per cent. The message is simple - a lower price means more truck traffic and greater revenue.' More from Louisa Bellée on+44(0)1 892 552 244 or lbellee@fta.co.uk |
| 04/12/03 | 80 Years in Norfolk | Barker & Sons, hauliers from North Norfolk, finally closed its doors in 2000, ending more than 80 years in business. The history of the firm is the subject of a book, 'Norfolk Carrier' by Brian Barker, the last owner of the business and David Lowe. Reviewed in the December edition of Roadway, the RHA's magazine, the book tells how the firm overcame a world war, unreliable vehicles, poor roads, bad weather and many other problems to be a successful business in and through the 1980s. Editor Hugh Sorrill says: 'Brian brilliantly defines the atmosphere of trade in 1950s Norwich – the aromas from Caley’s chocolate factory and from Potter’s Perfect Pickles and the days when open trays of medicine and cigarettes could be left out for collection without fear of theft. This powerful reminder of a carrier’s life will stir many memories.' More from Hugh Sorrill on +44(0)1 603 627 294 or hs@interregional.co.uk |
