14/01/042003 sees near record CV registrations – best since 1989Through 2003, commercial vehicle registrations climb 14.4 per cent month-on-month, to 363,687. This total is 12.9 per cent up on 2002 and only 2.0 per cent short of the 371,104 record set in 1989. Light CVs were up 14 per cent for the year, Trucks up 7.1 per cent for the year and buses and coaches up 8.8 per cent for 2003. Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive said, '2003 was a remarkable year for business investment in new commercial vehicles.' Many businesses showed real confidence in their markets with the need for efficient vans, trucks and buses. 'With GDP growth accelerating again and business confidence firm in the UK, the new CV market is well placed to hold 2003's strong registration volumes into 2004.' If consumer spending slows this will have an effect but the growth in business investment bodes well for the immediate future. Registrations climbed for 11 of the last 12 months; with December's total of 26,010 vehicles an all time record for the month. Consistently strong growth saw 363,687 new commercial vehicles registered, just below the all time registration record of 371,104 set in 1989.
