| 25/11/04 | Digital tacho farce | The FTA says EC digital tachograph plans are a farce, after challenging tachograph makers to produce units that had common fleet management protocols and to stop working on divergent technology likely to result in a costly VHS/Betamax type fiasco. The FTA says Siemens and Actia both said they had ignored this request and that it would be another eighteen months before they could meet inter-operability standards, even if they wanted to. FTA boss Richard Turner said this is simply not good enough. The bungled and already one year late introduction of digital tachographs by the EC and equipment makers seems to proceed with scant concern for the scheme's paymasters - truck operators across Europe. ‘The transport industry has been waiting for digital tachos for ten years and it seems unlikely that there will be more than one product to choose from next August, when they must be fitted to all new trucks. And those units will, by then use redundant technology which can't interface with the high-tech equipment increasingly used by Europe's two million trucks. What a farce.’ More from Louisa Bellée on+44(0)1 892 552 244 or lbellee@fta.co.uk |

| WHITE VAN TURNS GREEN | A van which challenges the urban delivery myth – that battery power can’t compete with diesel -- will be launched at the Commercial Vehicle Show this week. It is to be built in Coventry, with production scheduled to commence this autumn. The Modec van is the first zero emission van that is comparable in economy and performance to diesel equivalents, making it a real and viable urban delivery vehicle. Powered using modern battery technology, it produces no carbon dioxide or other pollutants, covers up to 120 miles on a single charge and reaches a top speed of 50 mph carrying a load of up to two tonnes. It is easy to operate and maintain, with only three moving parts in the electric motor instead of more than 300 in a typical diesel van engine. The battery can be recharged overnight at the fleet depot, allowing efficient and effective city delivery without the noise, smell or pollution traditionally associated with transit vans. The Modec van has been designed with large fleets in mind and early stage discussions are currently underway with a number of organisations including Ocado. Jamie Borwick, Chairman of Modec, said: “The Modec van is the first of its kind. It compares well with other vans currently on the market but goes one better because it produces no CO2 emissions. |
