| WHITE VAN TURNS GREEN | A van which challenges the urban delivery myth – that battery power can’t compete with diesel -- will be launched at the Commercial Vehicle Show this week. It is to be built in Coventry, with production scheduled to commence this autumn. The Modec van is the first zero emission van that is comparable in economy and performance to diesel equivalents, making it a real and viable urban delivery vehicle. Powered using modern battery technology, it produces no carbon dioxide or other pollutants, covers up to 120 miles on a single charge and reaches a top speed of 50 mph carrying a load of up to two tonnes. It is easy to operate and maintain, with only three moving parts in the electric motor instead of more than 300 in a typical diesel van engine. The battery can be recharged overnight at the fleet depot, allowing efficient and effective city delivery without the noise, smell or pollution traditionally associated with transit vans. The Modec van has been designed with large fleets in mind and early stage discussions are currently underway with a number of organisations including Ocado. Jamie Borwick, Chairman of Modec, said: “The Modec van is the first of its kind. It compares well with other vans currently on the market but goes one better because it produces no CO2 emissions. | |

| 11/12/2002 | Better Trucking comes sooner | Trucking, which says it is Britain's biggest road selling transport monthly, just changed its on-sale date and tweaked the design of some important regular features. Trucking is now on sale on the first Thursday of the month, meaning it should be the first monthly with the news. At the same time the Truck on Trial and Masterclass features are redesigned with ‘clearer photography and greater technical weight.’ Editor Richard Simpson says ‘the changes to the magazine reflect its stature as the only road transport monthly with a growing circulation in an otherwise declining market.’ The January edition is on sale now with a 16 page calendar book as well as its normal 132 pages. | 11/12/2002 | Commercial Motor tests Volvo's veteran FL 18-tonner | Commercial Motor's testers just took Volvo's well-established rigid, the FL 18-tonner round the magazine's Welsh test route. CM found the veteran model's torquey engine gave plenty of flexibility, while its economy disproved the theory that cleaner engines must be thirstier. The verdict? As you’ll see in the next edition, out on Thursday 12 December, having a few years under your belt doesn't stop you delivering goods in style.
